What's For Lunch?

We picked pretty much all the lettuce we finally grew in pots...in order to foil the sparrows who kept eating our lettuce sprouts. We were heading into 3 or 4 days of triple digit heat and decided to play it safe and enjoy the lettuce while it was still yummy and sweet. While we were picking we picked most of the remaining peas, thinking that the heat wasn't going to do them any good either. That was a good choice since the plants looked fried by the third day of 100+ heat and they have now been replaced with sweet Italian peppers. So we had make-your-own salad for lunch last Thursday, with peas on the side. It might be surprising to see how much lettuce a preschooler can eat when she just picked it herself!

Maybe the experience guarantees the young lady will be a veggie-lover for life? The peas look especially delicious, Leslie - haven't tried to grow them in a few years but fall might be better here. We're "enjoying" the mid-90's today.

I wish my kids would eat lettuce. I'm having trouble eating it all and no one else in my family does. You would think now that my kids are college aged they would be willing to eat a salad. Nope.

Annie...the peas were good although end-of-season so not quite as sweet as they'd been. My biggest problem is keeping the sparrows from eating the sprouts...although my dad got me a new mesh cover for my birthday that I'll be test driving this fall.
Daphne...I'm hoping that the kids will start young on garden veggies and grow up expecting them!

Looked at my lettuce today and went eek! The plants on the left of the container had all wilted, though on the right they were fine. I can't work outwhy (the water was fine) but am harvesting the rest today to make sure i get some!

Triple-digit heat? Yikes! That brings home the fact that as much as I complain about cool dry springs and bad winters, even "paradise" locales like Davis have their own challenges. :) Your peppers should really like that, though.

Good to hear that self-picking makes people eat more greens. Might have to try that on my boyfriend!

Yummy looking greens and peas... How wonderful that they are learning about good food early in life!
My lettuce is beautiful and lush right now, due to cool temps and lots of rain.
