Poppies!

It's my first year growing poppies and I was happy to see these blooms...I thought they were lovely.

That is, until this one bloomed! I have no idea why it is different...all the seeds came from the same place and almost all blooms were of the plainer type. Can anyone tell me if it was nature or nurture? I'd love to be able to get more of the more lush ones next year.

Peter has a couple like these that are the same color but are just... different... funny.

Try marking the ones with the frills with a piece of yarn, and save seeds from only them.

Are these annual poppies or perennial?

I would say nature on this one. They are all beautiful.

You know I love poppies. A bee with errant pollen is probably the cause. The big fun will be when you collect the seeds of the fringed one, and then see what its seedlings look like.
BTW - word verification is "excess" which seems to fit the fragile beauty of poppies. It seems you can never be in excess of them.

The variation I see in mine is mind-boggling at times. I'd do as Alison suggested and save seeds from the fringed/doubles and see whether they come true. I've given up trying to keep my seeds separated by form and even trying to keep the pinks and reds separate is tricky.

Just beautiful. I got rid of the few red poppies I had. They were strong and dependable, but the wrong color in the wrong place.

Leslie, I just found you via Carol at May Dreams Gardens. Is that wisteria on your banner yours??? I haven't been able to stop looking at it long enough to read you, but as soon as I do, I'll enjoy your poppies.

I guess there is a lot to learn about poppies, Melissa!
Good idea Alison...they are annual and I will definitely save the seeds separately.
I have been so enjoying them Layanee!
True Barb! These only make me want more next year.
You certainly have more experience than I do Cindy. I'd better get going on collecting the seeds.
I know how that goes, Pat. Some things just don't work no matter how pretty.
I'm enjoying them a lot Gail, even though it's not usually my favorite color. There is just something about them!
Welcome Wendy! Yes..that is my wisteria. That was before it got cut back for fence repair. It is almost back to that level...I think next spring should do the trick!
